The man that started it all. Charles bought the farm that would become Wilmot Orchards in 1975, before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph in 1976. Charles’ main passion is growing apples, however he wanted to try his hand at blueberries, and after a government land test stated he couldn’t grow blueberries on the farm, he knew he had to prove them wrong and that he did. While farm retirement is quickly coming up for Charles, he continues to be very active in the agriculture community holding numerous Board of Director or Chairperson positions with the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, Canadian Horticulture Council and the Ontario Apple Growers Association.
After finishing her degree in Agricultural Science at the University of Guelph in 1977, Judi officially moved onto the farm at became Mrs. Stevens in September of that same year. Judi helped out in all areas on the farm, but really shone when she began what would become Appleberries Café. Judi is the mastermind behind many of our most popular desserts offered in Appleberries Café, including the Oatmeal Squares, Coffee Cake, and Blueberry Sauce that goes in our Tarts and on top of our famous Cheesecake. Judi’s creative talents extend past the kitchen too; creating Wilmot Orchards’ logo, designing Appleberries Café and product labels. Retirement is also quickly approaching for Judi, and she’s looking forward to spending time on her other creative hobbies.
Pick Your Own, Cafe and Social Media Manager
Courtney has literally grown up on the farm. Having spent many summers in the booth with the Pick Your Own staff, as something to do it came as only a little surprise when at 10 years only, Courtney pushed Charles out of the way of a cash register because he was taking to long ringing a customer through. Ever since then, Courtney had a summer job, that at the time, she had no idea would turn into a career. As Judi has started to step back from the business, Courtney has attempted to fill her mother’s void managing the Pick Your Own and Appleberries Café. Once her parents officially retire, Courtney will take on more of the ownership of Wilmot Orchards.
Ian started his career at Wilmot Orchards during high school as a summer student in the Pick Your Own. Little did we know that while in his third year at the University of Guelph, he would come to have a chat with Charles about what it takes to getting into farming, and leave with a job offer. After finishing his degree at Guelph, a double major in Physics and Music, Ian started working full time at Wilmot as our General Manager. He has shadowed and learned from Charles over the last few years and now his main responsibility is to grow our crops, a job that sounds easy on paper but can be very complicated. Once Charles and Judi retire, Ian will also be part of the new ownership team.
Crop Prodution Manager
Ian joined Wilmot Orchards in his early teens, but had been watching us closely before then, from the window of his childhood house across the street. Ian worked as a summer student in the Pick Your Own for 7 years, before taking a year off to go to school. After deciding agriculture was what he really liked, he moved back into the area, started the Horticulture Program at Durham College, and began working at Wilmot again. Ian has now graduated from the Horticulture Program and works full time at Wilmot, mainly in the orchard helping Ian Parker, but can often be found, back where he started, around the blueberries during the season.
Head Cafe Baker and Office Manager
Adrienne started at Wilmot as a part time baker to help Judi bake all the desserts we had available in Appleberries Café at the time. Since then Adrienne, with the help of an assistant, create all of our current desserts. Adrienne has also created many of customer’s new favourite treats, including our Cupcakes, Blueberry Mousse Cream Puffs, Shortbread Cookies and Blueberry Almond Cake. Adrienne has also taken over the role of Office Manager, helping with bookkeeping and paperwork in our office. Adrienne recently graduated from the Advanced Agriculture Leadership Program as part of Class 16, joining Charles and Judi as alumni of Class 5 and Class 7. Along with Courtney and Ian Parker, Adrienne will be part of the new ownership team when Charles and Judi retire.
